The Essential Facts of Backgammon Tactics – Part Two
September 29th, 2026 by Claudia

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of talent and luck. The aim is to shift your pieces safely around the game board to your inner board while at the same time your opponent shifts their checkers toward their home board in the opposite direction. With opposing player checkers shifting in opposing directions there is bound to be conflict and the requirement for specific strategies at specific instances. Here are the 2 final Backgammon strategies to round out your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the purpose of the blocking tactic is to slow down the opponent to move her chips, the Priming Game plan is to completely block any movement of the opponent by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s checkers will either get hit, or end up in a battered position if she at all attempts to escape the wall. The ambush of the prime can be setup anywhere between point 2 and point 11 in your half of the board. Once you’ve successfully built the prime to prevent the activity of the opponent, the competitor doesn’t even get to roll the dice, and you shift your checkers and roll the dice again. You will be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Strategy

The objectives of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game plan are very similar – to hinder your competitor’s positions in hope to better your chances of succeeding, however the Back Game technique uses seperate techniques to do that. The Back Game plan is generally employed when you are far behind your competitor. To play Backgammon with this technique, you have to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This technique is more complex than others to employ in Backgammon seeing as it needs careful movement of your pieces and how the checkers are relocated is partly the result of the dice toss.
