In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main strategies used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This consists of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.
The Blitz
This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious trouble taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
