The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part 2
January 21st, 2026 by Claudia

As we have dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a game of skill and luck. The goal is to shift your checkers carefully around the board to your inside board while at the same time your opposing player shifts their chips toward their home board in the opposite direction. With opposing player chips shifting in opposing directions there is bound to be conflict and the requirement for specific techniques at particular times. Here are the two final Backgammon plans to round out your game.

The Priming Game Strategy

If the purpose of the blocking strategy is to slow down the opponent to shift his checkers, the Priming Game plan is to absolutely barricade any movement of the opposing player by assembling a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s checkers will either get bumped, or result a damaged position if he/she at all attempts to escape the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anywhere between point two and point eleven in your game board. Once you’ve successfully built the prime to prevent the activity of your opponent, the opponent does not even get a chance to toss the dice, that means you move your pieces and roll the dice again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Plan

The aims of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game plan are very similar – to hinder your competitor’s positions in hope to better your chances of succeeding, but the Back Game plan relies on alternate tactics to do that. The Back Game technique is frequently employed when you’re far behind your competitor. To compete in Backgammon with this plan, you have to hold two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This strategy is more complex than others to play in Backgammon because it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the chips are relocated is partly the outcome of the dice toss.
