The Essential Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part Two
June 27th, 2025 by Claudia

As we have dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a game of talent and pure luck. The goal is to shift your checkers safely around the board to your inside board and at the same time your opponent shifts their checkers toward their inner board in the opposing direction. With competing player pieces moving in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the requirement for specific tactics at particular instances. Here are the two final Backgammon strategies to round out your game.

The Priming Game Strategy

If the aim of the blocking tactic is to slow down the opponent to move his pieces, the Priming Game tactic is to absolutely barricade any movement of the opposing player by constructing a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s pieces will either get bumped, or end up in a bad position if he at all attempts to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be setup anyplace between point 2 and point 11 in your game board. As soon as you have successfully assembled the prime to stop the movement of the competitor, the competitor does not even get a chance to toss the dice, that means you move your pieces and roll the dice again. You will win the game for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The objectives of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game strategy are similar – to harm your competitor’s positions in hope to improve your chances of winning, but the Back Game plan uses different techniques to achieve that. The Back Game plan is frequently used when you’re far behind your opponent. To play Backgammon with this plan, you need to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This tactic is more complex than others to use in Backgammon because it requires careful movement of your chips and how the checkers are relocated is partially the result of the dice toss.
