The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part 1
March 30th, 2025 by Claudia

The objective of a Backgammon match is to shift your pieces around the game board and bear those pieces off the board quicker than your opponent who works just as hard to attempt the same buthowever they move in the opposing direction. Succeeding in a round in Backgammon needsrequires both strategy and luck. Just how far you will be able to shift your pieces is up to the numbers from rolling the dice, and the way you move your chips are decided on by your overall gambling strategies. Players use a number of plans in the different parts of a match dependent on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Plan

The goal of the Running Game technique is to entice all your pieces into your inner board and pull them off as quickly as you could. This strategy concentrates on the pace of advancing your chips with absolutely no time spent to hit or stop your opponent’s pieces. The ideal scenario to employ this strategy is when you believe you might be able to move your own chips faster than your opponent does: when 1) you have less chips on the game board; 2) all your checkers have past your opponent’s checkers; or 3) your opposing player doesn’t use the hitting or blocking tactic.

The Blocking Game Plan

The primary aim of the blocking strategy, by its title, is to block your opponent’s chips, temporarily, not worrying about shifting your checkers rapidly. As soon as you have created the blockade for your opponent’s movement with a few pieces, you can move your other pieces rapidly from the board. You will need to also have a clear strategy when to back off and move the chips that you employed for the blockade. The game becomes interesting when the opposition uses the same blocking strategy.
